Introducing e-prescriptions that met stringent federal regulations
AdvancedRx wanted to brings speed and convenience to prescribing by rolling out e-prescribing for controlled substances within their existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. To do so, they first had to tackle a few key challenges:
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure full compliance with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulations for electronically prescribing controlled substances
- Security: Protect sensitive patient and prescription data from unauthorized access and fraud
- System Integration: Integrate the new feature into their existing EHR system without disruption and ensuring interoperability with external stakeholders such as pharmacies and regulatory bodies.

AdvancedRx partnered with us to implement Microsoft BizTalk Server with key features such as REST API, digital signatures, and advanced security capabilities to overcome integration and security.
- DEA Compliance and Digital Signatures: One of DEA’s key requirements for prescribing controlled substances electronically is digital signatures used to ensure authenticity, integrity, and non-repudiation of prescriptions. With BizTalk, AdvancedRx met DEA’s EPCS (Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances) e-prescribing regulations, by enabling digital signatures for prescriptions as well as ensuring each prescription was securely authenticated by the prescribing healthcare provider.
- Audit trail for compliance: Every prescription was secure and legally compliant, with an audit trail for full accountability
- Security: BizTalk encrypted prescription data controlled who had access with role-based access control (RBAC) permissions, and provided real-time monitoring to prevent fraud and ensure privacy. Every action taken within the system was logged, and BizTalk provided real-time monitoring of prescription activities, ensuring accountability and transparency.
- System Integration: BizTalk’s REST API seamlessly connected AdvancedRx’s EHR system with pharmacies and regulatory bodies, making sure prescriptions were validated in real time for compliance and accuracy. Through the REST API, prescriptions were validated in real time for patient eligibility, drug interactions, and DEA compliance, ensuring that the entire prescription process adhered to regulatory standards.
